Dear Kathleen: I was recently laid off from Sun Microsystems in Broomfield CO where I was an IT Manager and Senior Project Manager for 6.5 years. Sun contracted an outplacement firm for the career transition services for the laid off workers, and I participated in all of their classes and services, but it wasn’t until I read your book - The Thrill of the Hunt - where I feel I learned the real “street tactics” for hunting down job opportunities and finding decision makers.
The outplacement firm’s classes were good for how to develop your personal commercial, how to write a resume, how to interview and negotiate, but their advice on how to penetrate the hidden job market and find hiring managers simply fell flat. Their advice was to conduct informational interviews and go to lots of networking events. Intuitively, it felt to me that there had to be a better, faster and cheaper way to go about it (maybe it’s because I’ve always been a natural researcher like you :-)
So, in summary, your book is definitely the “missing information” that job-seekers need. I especially need to apply your techniques because I have a non-standard high tech background and have never come off as well “on paper” as I do on the phone or in person. Your techniques for actively finding and connecting with people where you have the chance to directly display your confidence, drive, sense of humor and personality-beyond just the laundry list of required job skills-is extremely valuable for a person like me…
Please let me know when you are available to talk. My contact information is below... I look forward to speaking with you.
Sincerely, Don
Mark, Thank you for your time this afternoon. Last week I attended a job search seminar ... It was offered by Kathleen Conners. Her program utilizes many of the same philosophies that you are utilizing but she offers a more complete method of searching for the unadvertised jobs. Her methods are so simple that I have already received benefit in my search for employment. Example; I thought I had found all the wireless companies in Colorado by using your database, yet I found many more using her system. Don't get me wrong, your database is a valuable tool, but the follow-on search after it is exhausted is rather weak under your program. Kathleen's program has energized my search once again. I believe this system would have made the difference for my search if I could have used it from the start, along with XXX's program. I never felt finding a job would be so challenging. JC
Kathleen, I thought it was a great course… I think you have a winning idea and you should Write some courseware and take this course around the country… I can personally vouch for the accuracy you bring. And since I'm also a sad statistic of someone who lost thousands of dollars trying targeted resumes, I can also vouch for that as well. You are totally, deadly accurate when you say that techniques of yesteryear do NOT work in the new marketplace. They just plain don't work at all and it's a mystery why anybody would teach job seekers to use outmoded and senseless tactics. What you really have here is what we in the intelligence business (when I worked at NSA, National Security Agency, years ago) called an IRA course: intelligence research analyst. IRA's do this kind of sleuthing in search of terrorists and bad guys all over the world. These are great research techniques. I especially liked the parts where you asked us as a class, "Now. Who do you call here? What do you ask for?" Anyway—thanks again. PT
"Kathleen has been there! She talks from personal experience and knows what works!! She's interested in the success of each individual. She's not putting on these seminars just to make a lot of money but rather to help individuals who are looking for work!!"
"The concept and how-to regarding “putting it all together”…related to how to follow a small piece of information in the news, an unrelated employment ad, or even a name off the internet, and follow the information “tree” to locate hiring decision makers and related contacts."
"This seminar provides more focused guidance, ideas and recommendations than what is provided by an outplacement service." "The hardest part of finding a job in hard times is getting an interview. This is the only seminar I’ve found that provides techniques for uncovering companies that are hiring."
"It is an eye opener to insure realization of the ‘hidden’ job market that seems to elude so many competitors in job search ‘roulette’. Why gamble with your future when you can secure it through successful, repeatable strategies??"
"I think the way to stand apart from the crowd is to get to the hiring manager before there is a crowd. This seminar teaches how to do that." "This seminar provided practical not theory on job search practices. Career Planning companies want to charge you 10’s of thousands of dollars to do these same tasks that you can perform yourself. With this advice and a plan of attack, the job search should be a rewarding experience." "Your seminar yesterday really exceeded my expectations. I feel like you gave me a new "toolbox" to work with, and I'm anxious to try out your approach to job searches. I will definitely be telling my friends about your seminar." "It seems to me that most of what you showed us can be summed up with, 'The information we need is available, it’s just not immediately obvious.' Therefore, we need to look for clues on which companies are expanding – not job postings."
"What has been very interesting about this job search is how different it was this time around. The methods and techniques that worked for years are now outdated. Your class helped us adapt to the new changes in finding work."
"Kathleen's ideas take you outside the box of thinking. She helps you get the creative juices flowing within your head to help you locate interviews and jobs. All of her ideas are just plain ole common sense and you still get to keep your honesty and integrity as you pursue your job hunt. In fact, I keep asking myself, "Why did I not think of that?" The techniques and ideas are simple! But the key factor still remains, you need to take the time to look and work hard at uncovering unadvertised job positions. Kathleen helps you think like a detective and to leave no stones unturned looking for clues to employment opportunities."
“You did not charge us enough for all that you know.”
"After spending some time with you, things are on the upside. I have two interviews this week. They were contacts I was working before your class, but your class helped me do a better job at cultivating these leads into interviews."
"Kathleen Conners taught us how to find job opportunities by using techniques that most job hunters do not know. What I learned about my job search is prospective employers want candidates that find creative ways which Kathleen has taught us to find hidden jobs that you will not see on Internet sites. When job seekers post their resumes on the Internet job sites, they are considered "B" grade candidates. Kathleen has taught us how to be "A" grade job candidates."
"It is so refreshing to find new breath that actually puts the responsibility back on the shoulders of those of us looking for work and takes out the feeling that I pay and someone will find me a job just by showing up to listen. Kathleen gave me back the impetus to take back my own power in the job search."
